Discipline: Physics
(Discipline Code: 0702)
Brief Introduction to Discipline
Authorized by the academic degrees committee of the state council, our physics discipline has the right to grant the first-class Phd degree in physics, since march 2011. Our current focuses mainly lie in theoretical physics, condensed matter physics, optics, etc. The physics discipline is within the top 1% of ESI ranking all over the world, and is among the key disciplines of Jiangsu Province during the 13th and 14th Five Year Plans.
There are more than 40 full-time professors in this discipline, many of whom received national/provincial award/titles. The vast majority of supervisors had overseas study or work experience.
This discipline currently has research bases such as the Key Laboratory of Quantum Materials and Information Devices of the Ministry of Education and the Inter-science Platform of Southeast University. In the past 5 years, faculty members of this discipline have directed over 70 national projects, published over 1000 high-impact academic papers in international first-class academic journals, and won a second prize of State Science and Technology Progress Award and two science and technology awards granted by provincial government or ministries with the collaboration of sister universities.
Objectives
Students will grasp the fundamental principles of Marxism, stick to the Four Cardinal Principles, have the sense of patriotic duty, abide by the laws and regulations, and behave upright. Meanwhile, the students will develop their spirit of serving the people and devoting to the construction of socialism.
Students will acquire solid and broad theoretical principles as well as systematical and in-depth expertise in the field of physical sciences. Students will have the capability of doing scientific research independently and solving relevant technical problems. They will be competent for researches, developing, teaching, etc.
Students will acquire proficiency in at least one language other than Chinese.

In accordance with Principles and Requirements of Southeast University on Topic Selection and Topic Report of Graduate Thesis.
Interim Assessment
In accordance with Measures of Southeast University on Medium-term Assessment and Screening for Master Graduates.
Thesis
(including requirements on literature reading, thesis writing, publication, etc.)
Literature Reading (for reference only)
Students are required to read at least 50 literatures (including 30 literatures written in foreign languages) related to their thesis and research direction, and write a review.
Thesis Writing (for reference only)
In addition to compliance with the provisions of the University, thesis must be written in a systematic and complete manner, presenting clear concepts, correct arguments, realistic description, concise writing structure, smooth and concise writing style, correct calculation, reliable data, and clear icons.
Thesis Evaluation (for reference only)
Thesis should be written based on students' own study and research. The findings presented in the thesis should have higher academic value and positive impact on economic development of China. Students are required to conduct at least one year research and to publish at least one papers in the area of their disciplines before being eligible for applying for a Master's Degree.
To be eligible for publication, a paper must comply with the Requirements for Research Achievements for the Award of Master’s and Doctoral Degrees at Southeast University and relevant degree administration documents, as well as the Assessment Criteria for Research Achievements of Doctoral and Master’s Students in the School of Physics When Applying for Degrees.
